Well, I’m running another trail race this year, one I hadn’t planned on running.
As you may have figured out in my Superior 50 recap, I wasn’t satisfied with how the day went. Stomach issues led to a less-than-pleasant time on the trail for me. Although I was able to get things under control during the later stages of the race (eventually feeling incredible!), in the days that followed I started to feel the itch to test my fitness again.
I knew I was in really good shape and didn’t want to waste that by ending my racing season. Sooooooooo I ended up registering for the Wild Duluth 50k after I checked out the course (I’ve never ran this race) – it is entirely on trails that I run just about every day, starting at Oldenburg Point in Jay Cooke – this got me pretty pumped up and I couldn’t resist!
I ended up taking 9 days completely off after the 50 miler, followed by a nice transition week, then back into normal race training again. I don’t know if it’s the fact that this race is 20 miles shorter than the one I just did, the 9 days of rest, or the fact that fall is in full swing, but I am getting really jacked for this race (next weekend).
In the mean time, I’ll be running the Whistlestop 1/2 marathon with my wife and one of her good friends THIS Saturday over in Ashland, WI. If you have not taken part in the Whistlestop weekend of running, I highly encourage it. The course is ran on a Munger-like trail that is unpaved during the fall with colorful trees all around you…pretty magical 🙂
Another exciting event coming up is this month’s Run Duluth meetup at Wild State Cider next Monday, October 14th (Facebook event here)!! Wild State was gracious enough to open up just for our group as they are typically closed on Mondays. We will also have Duluth Grill family restaurant gift cards to give away to people who attend! Show up solo or grab a group of friends and come join a fun/growing community of Duluth-area runners for an easy stroll on the trails followed by fun times at the brewery — hope to see you there!!!
Now get outside and enjoy fall before winter shows up 🙂
