This is the sixteenth edition of The Duluth Runner Interview Series, where we get in touch with (mainly) local runners and athletes to share a bit of their story while inspiring others to pursue an active lifestyle.
Intro
Today’s guest hails from Esko and enjoys getting out most days for an early morning run. When not running with her crew of friends, or enjoying her summers off, she can be found teaching Kindergarten students at Winterquist Elementary in Esko.
Today’s guest is…Kari Knutson!
Interview
Why is running important to you?
Running is important to me for several reasons. It started out as way to meet people and get exercise. I have always exercised but not daily. I started running with my neighbor about 9 years ago. It has been so fun. Running in the morning has helped me have more patience with my students.
I was diagnosed with Osteoporosis about 5 years ago and since I have been running and taking my medication my numbers have put me out of the Osteoporosis range. Running makes me feel better and happier!
What are the top two or three things that you do to prevent injury? Have you been susceptible to certain injuries in the past?
I have been fortunate to not have any injuries until the past year. I have had Planter Fasciitis for the past 14 months. I am getting better after using several different forms of interventions. I have orthotics for my shoes, needle therapy, taking 6 weeks off of running turning to riding my bike, stretching, rolling, icing, etc.
What keeps you motivated when you don’t feel like heading out the door for a run?
My friends who I run with every day. I do not want to let them run alone. We have a great support group. Rain or shine, hot or freezing cold we run several days a week at 5:15 a.m.
When/what is your next race?
I am running the Ragnar in August, Twin Cities 10 mile, and the Whistle Stop in October.
Do you prefer roads or trails and why?
I really love the trails but the road is easier to run on at 5:15 a.m.
What is your most memorable race or running achievement?
I like all the races but my most memorable would be my first full marathon ever. It was the Moose Mountain full marathon in Lutsen. It was so fun but boy was it a work out. Beautiful race!
Name one racing experience you would like to forget (please describe).
I do not have a race I want to forget yet! Hmm should I?
What is something non-running related you would like to share with readers?
I do not have a non-endurance activity that I can share. I like to be active. If I am not running I am biking or going to Boot Camp. I love to be active and it helps me be a better person. I guess if I have to pick a non – endurance activity it would be sleeping. I do need a lot of sleep so I can wake up at 4:45 for my daily run!
Closing
