If you are a year-round runner/hiker, or do longer endurance events that occur at least partially in the dark, a headlamp is usually required.

I do most of my long runs late at night (i.e. in the dark) after the kids are ready for bed, which means I log a lot of time with a headlamp. While I still do wear a headlamp during these runs, I also pair it with the Ultraspire Lumen 800 Multisport Waist Light.

I first stumbled upon a waist light last year right as Greg and I were finishing up a long run. Someone was running towards us lighting up the woods like I had never seen before. This person was equipped with the headlamp/waist light combo and I was very impressed! That person ended up being Ryan Zimny and I went home and ordered my own waist light that night! Even more impressive was the fact that we were just getting done at like 10:45 PM or so in a pair, and he was just starting his run solo…talk about a bada$$!

This waist light has great battery life and the brightness is truly impressive! I’m a big fan of the way it lights up terrain while I’m running on trails and creates shadows for easier navigation/foot placement (see example video below).

The waist band itself is snug and does not bounce around like I envisioned ahead of trying it out for the first time.

The light angle itself can also be adjusted up or down depending on the incline you’re faced with – I’ve found this helpful for longer ascent/descents vs. keeping it angled straight ahead. This has been a great addition to my night time running routine!
