If you are new to trail running, or simply looking to expand the options in your current runners tool belt, the Duluth Trails Highlight articles will help on your journey to explore the many (amazing) trails Duluth has to offer.
I figured I’d start out with a newer trail that is typically known for its mountain biking. However, it doubles as a runners paradise year-round (thanks to groomed trails and plenty of fat-tire bike traffic). That trail is Mission Creek.
Mission Creek is one of my favorite places to run. Maybe it’s because Hexum and I are always running them for our Wednesday night long runs, but I have a soft spot for this trail system. It could also be influenced by the roller-coaster like sensation I get running on various parts of the trail…I feel like a kid again and running is truly a blast!
We often park at the top of the hill off of Becks just before Skyline Parkway coming from I-35…the parking lot is even plowed during the winter! From there you cross a set of train tracks, as well as the Munger Trail, and you have multiple options to choose from.
You can take a slight left onto the single-track bike trail, take a sharp left and hop on the Munger for a bit before joining back up with the trails, or continue straight on an old jeep/access road for a while. No matter what you choose, fun times await 🙂 There are signs along the way at major intersections so you can stay on track – these are very helpful for me because I’m usually just following Hexum and not paying attention to where we’re at.
As I mentioned earlier, I am reminded quite frequently of being on a roller coaster while running this trail system. The gentle rolling hills are so fun – don’t be afraid to mix in a jump or two for added effect! I should also mention that these trails were machine-made, which add to the smooth running experience. Although running on the Superior Hiking Trail (SHT) is my first love, being able to focus more on the surroundings is an added bonus while on the Mission Trails because footing is more consistent.
So if you have not yet enjoyed a run at Mission Creek, I highly encourage you to head out to West Duluth and start logging some miles on the endless array of trails that await! Have fun!!
