Let’s go back to early September for a moment.

Granted, I may not remember every detail exactly as it happened, but I’m pretty sure the first thing my wife Nichole told me after I dropped out of the Superior 50 miler this year was, “You’re doing another race.” And yes, this is after I had told her earlier in the day at an aid station that I’m done doing ultras for a while.

Well, after reflecting on the race some more, realizing I’m still in great shape from all the training this year, and not knowing how to turn off my competitive side yet (maybe some day?!?), I joined Nichole in the google search for races within driving distance of Duluth in October/November.

I haven’t ran a trail race outside of Duluth or the North Shore yet, so decided to try something new and register for the Hixon 50k in La Crosse, Wisconsin on Halloween. I’ve heard great things about the race and have always wanted to run in bluff country, so I’ll get to cross that off my list later this month!

Even though it’s still several weeks away I’m starting to get the nerves/butterflies that go along with attempting something outside of one’s comfort zone. And no matter how many times you’ve ran an ultramarathon, it’s still 31 miles and needs to be respected. I love fall running, and despite the warmer temps and humidity that think they’re hilarious sticking around still, I’m really hoping for some crisp temperatures come late October!

Another aspect of the race I’m looking forward to: Greg will also be running this race!! We spend a good chunk of time training together but have only done the same race once. Hopefully I can finish within an hour after him this time 😁

Good luck to everyone else training for one of the Hixon races (and any other fall race) – hopefully see you in La Crosse!
